Producer JD Majethia, who is coming back with his hit show 'Khichdi', says it is difficult to make sequels but the team has worked hard to tickle the funny bone of the audience once again. One of the most popular shows of Indian television, 'Khichdi' will go on air from April 14 on Star Plus.
The news comes after Majethia brought back his another cult show 'Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai', on streaming service Hotstar last year. 'Sequels are not easy as they have already set the benchmark. Both Aatish Kapadia (director) and I took a call that if we are bringing 'Sarabhai..' and 'Khichdi' again, we will have to work hard a lot on the script. Initially, when the promo of 'Khichdi' was out, there was nervousness. Once we got a positive response from the audience, the nervousness went away,' Majethia told reporters here at the press conference.
'Khichdi' follows the story of the Parekhs, a middle-class Gujarati family that lives in an old mansion. A bunch of cameo appearances by actors such as Ratna Pathak Shah, Renuka Shahane, and Deepshika Nagpal among others is a new element added to the show. 'Khichdi' is returning with the original cast - Supriya Pathak, Vandana Pathak, Anang Desai and Rajeev Mehta, along with Majethia - with one-hour long 20 episodes being planned to be aired over the weekends. We all wanted to be part of the show again. When the offer came again, I just jumped at it. I was missing playing the part of Hansa,' Pathak said about her much-loved part who is lazy and foolish. When we started work on the show, I easily got into the character of Hansa. I feel she is inside me,' she added.
While Vandana said she was initially a bit nervous to essay the role of Jayshree, the gossip queen daughter-in-law. But once she got into her avatar, it was easy. Mehta, who plays Hansa's husband Praful, the notoriously stupid son, credits Kapadia for creating this character. On the other hand, Kapadia is all praises for his cast. He said, 'Comedy is all about getting the timing right, especially when you are on stage. But in TV shows, comedy is about chemistry and it should be there between the actors.. The timing is made by director and editors.'
'Khichdi' debuted on Star Plus in 2002, while its second season, 'Instant Khichdi' aired on Star Plus's sister channel, Star One in 2005. A film based on the series, titled 'Khichdi: The Movie', was released in 2010 with the principal cast. It became the first Indian TV series to get a film adaptation.
Khichdi Season 3: After winning hearts with its earlier two seasons producer J.D. Majethia’s famous TV serial Khichdi is now all set to make a comeback. This will be the third season of the serial. Besides the regular actors, this season will see actors like Renuka Shahane, Deepshika Nagpal, Debina Banerjee, Deepak Parikh, Amit Dolawat, Bhaktiyar Irani and others.
The producer said,“We have decided that this time Khichdi will be swadisht with many walk-in characters. That will be the highlight of this season. Even for small roles, we are talking to talented actors,” says producer JD Majethia. Deepshika is excited to be a part of the show. She says, “I had worked with JD and Aatish in Baa Bahoo Aur Baby and I loved my character Iccha. So, this time when Aatish called me and told me I will be playing a glamorous doctor, I was more than happy. I even asked him why he didn’t cast me as one of the characters earlier “.
When asked the reason for bringing actors on board to do cameos, he said, “Because, the present edition of Khichdi is very contemporary. The responsibility on our shoulders has increased tremendously. Also because Khichdi has grown tremendously as a brand”. He revealed that the serial will be telecasted on ‘Star Plus’.
Khichdi Season 3 Promo –
JD Majethia's Khichdi series has been one of our favourite since its inception. The hilarious serial about a Gujarati family has won hearts across the globe. After the success of Khichdi and Instant Khichdi, a spin off movie, Khichdi: The Movie was also made. However, since then, everyone has been waiting for the series to be make a comeback. And that's what has happened! Khichdi season 3 is back after more than a decade and we can't keep calm. From what we had heard, the show will have a new track, but the same old cast. Supriya Pathak, Rajeev Mehta, Vandana Pathak, Anang Desai and JD Majethia reprise their roles, while Ratna Pathak Shah and Renuka Shahane are new additions.
But what is Khichdi season 3 all about? Well, the first episode aired today (April 14) and we have to say it was very entertaining. Not only did it make us nostalgic, but also made us hold our stomach and laugh. But to give you a better insight into what we thought about Khichdi season 3's first episode, it's plot, what we liked and what we didn't like, here's our full review!(ALSO READ - JD Majethia on Khichdi season 3: Sequels are not easy as they have already set the benchmark)
What's it about?
Khichdi season 3 revolves around the Parekh family's woes after a builder cons them. The family featuring Babuji a.k.a Tulsidas Parekh (Anang Desai), Praful Parekh (Rajeev Mehta), Hansa Parekh (Supriya Pathak), Jayshree Parekh (Vandana Pathak) and Himanshu Seth (JD Majethia) is being threatened by angry people who had invested their money in a housing project started by them. However, after the fraud builder conned them and ran away, the family has nothing to do but face the consequences. From angry people beating them up to a don giving them threats and kidnapping Hansa, the Parekh family is deep in trouble. In fact, their own house does not have walls or a ceiling too. But even though they are being tested, they don't lose hope and be their own selves. How will they get out of this mess? And what mess will they create? Well, we will come to know that in the coming few episodes.
What's Hot?
The Parekh family and the Khichdi series always makes us go down memory lane and makes us nostalgic. The family drama also makes us realise how important our families are and even though we constantly bicker and fight with our family members, they love us and will always be there for us. These emotions with the fact that the show has a really new and interesting storyline has us excited. The jokes, puns and dialogues are hilarious and it made us laugh out loud. And even though Khichdi is coming back after such a long gap, the actors have not lost touch. The continuity is maintained and the trademark dialogues like 'Chai leke aa rahi hai, ki bahar se mangaun?,' 'Main hu na, main samjhata hu' and several others felt nice to see and hear. The performances by the actors are spot on and we have to say the show was visually appealing too and has been executed well. And as always, Hansa and Praful always make us crack up. Their stupidity is unexplainable but the comedy that follows it is incredible. Meet the Parekh Parivaar Tonight at 8pm only on STAR PLUS. #Khichdipic.twitter.com/2KMndK7UM4

What's Not!
Khichdi season 3 has been introduced during the Indian T20 tournament season and that to in the 8 pm slot, when the big matches take place. This makes it very difficult for people to enjoy the show and the cricket match. Also the fact that the episode is one hour long might get tedious later on. The epsiode should have been crisper and not more than 30 minutes long! Some jokes are old and they might not connect with gen-next too. Some scenes were made over dramatic too and that could have been avoided. But apart from all this, we have no complaints. What to do?
Well we loved the first episode and we are sure with an interesting plot, Khichdi season 3 will not only be entertaining to watch, but it will also make you ROFL. The family drama will also give out some lessons! So watch Khichdi every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm only on Star Plus!

The second season was called Instant Khichdi, which made its debut on STAR Plus's sister channel, STAR One.A film was made, based on the previous two TV series Khichdi and Instant Khichdi. It is the first film in the history of Hindi cinema to be based on a television series.[2]

Television series[edit]
Khichdi (2002–2004)[edit]
Khichdi follows the story of a Gujarati family called Parekhs, who live in an old mansion. The joint family encounters many typically Indian situations, but they try to solve it in the most atypical fashion imaginable. This is a funny bunch of people that is firmly united in their movement to get separated. They want to sell their ancestral property and move out and form their own nuclear families. But the head of their family does not agree. He gives them the choice to walk out and survive on their own; but nobody is ready to let go of the money that is due to them. So they stay together and wait for the 'head' to change his mind or stop breathing, whichever happens first. And this is where the upwardly mobile middle class joint family faces its trials and tribulations. Khichdi is a look at the lighter side of an Indian joint family.
Instant Khichdi (2005–2006)[edit]
The series portrays the life of an eccentric Gujarati joint family living in Bombay. The family is led by the elderly Tulsidas Parekh and consists of his offspring, who he acquired at a local carnival. The first season, particularly the initial episodes, focus on the idiosyncratic members of the family who are only united by their desire to separate from each other. Since the patriarch does not permit them to sell off their house and separate into nuclear families, they live on hoping that he changes his mind or passes away. Eventually, they move into a much larger house left behind by a deceased aunt.
-They become overnight millionaires when they discover oil in their older property. The second season portrays humorous depictions of a bourgeois family that is trying to settle itself into higher society with their new-found wealth. They live on in their own eccentric way, trying to ace the lives of the super-rich.
The first season portrayed the trials and tribulations of a joint family and often touched an emotional cord. Later on, particularly in the second season the show started focusing more on the situational comedy, as the characters started fitting themselves into their eccentricities. Several new characters were added during the course of the show. It is largely episodic with most plots running for one or two episodes. At times it runs into subplots that last a few episodes such as the marriages of Miraben, Raju, and Himanshu. Rarely, episodes run into flashback such as the marriage of Praful and Hansa.
Khichdi (2018)[edit]
A new continuation series premiered on Star Plus from April 14, 2018.

The Parekhs gets stuck after the builder escapes in between the construction of their apartment and some people threaten them to kill until they do not return the money taken in exchange of apartments.[3]
Film[edit]
Khichdi: The Movie (2010)[edit]
A film based on the series, titled Khichdi: The Movie, was released on 1 October 2010 and starred the same principal cast. It became the first Indian television series to be adapted into a film.[4] The film faced stiff competition from big-budget movies like Priyanka Chopra - Ranbir Kapoor starrer Anjaana Anjaani and dubbed Hindi version of Aishwarya Rai - Rajinikanth starrer Enthiran (Robot) and in the end its performance at the box office was termed below average.[5]
