Ajay Devgan changed his name to Ajay Devgn in 2009 on request of his family. He married his lady love, Kajol, a famous Bollywood actress in 1999 and the couple has two kids a daughter born in 2003 and a son born in 2010. Ajay Devgn started his acting career on a high note as an action hero in the movie Phool Aur Kaantey in 1991 where he played the role of the son of underworld don played by Amrish Puri. He is aware of his fathers business but stays away from it till his ageing father convinces him to take over the job. His wife, Pooja, a simple girl is not happy with the situation and things go bad when their son is kidnapped by dons rivals due to rivalry. The movie was a grand success partly to its excellent action sequence as well as super hit music score. Ajay was nominated for and won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. The success of the movie followed with some moderate and some excellent successes at the box office for the young action hero. He came to be recognized as a brooding man and was seen in similar roles in many of his movies including Jigar, Platform, Shaktiman, Dhanwan and Bedardi. His movie Dilwale was a high grosser in 1994 and brought him box office success. He was also seen in movies like Suhaag, Vijaypath, Naajayaz, Hulchul and Gundaraj. It was during the shooting of Gundaraj that he and Kajol started seeing each other. People were rather skeptical of the success of their relationship due to the obvious differences in their personality. However, the audience loved their on screen chemistry and the duo went on to give romantic success in the movies Ishq and like Pyaar to Hona hi Tha in 1997 and 1998 respectively. In Ishq Ajay played the role of a rich boy who falls for a simple poor girl played by Kajol. The movie also had Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla and was a big success at the box office. In the other movie he plays the role of a thief with a heart of gold who wishes to help his family by stealing a rather expensive diamond necklace. On his way back he meets Sanjana (played by Kajol). The two become friends and Ajay decides to help her win her lover back. The movie was based on the English hit French Kiss and was a grand success at the box office. Apart from these, Ajay Devgn also acted in some not so successful movies like Jung, Itihaas, Diljale and Haqeeqat. However, the year 1998 was rather important for him. He acted in a Mahesh Bhatt movie titled Zakhm which was based on the communal tensions brewing in Mumbai in the period of riots. The movie was a grand hit with the critics and won him his first National Award for Best Actor. Ajay had effectively managed to create the persona of a romantic hero by this time and in 1999 he delivered another award winning performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan. The movie was a grand box office success and people loved Ajay Devgn in the role of a husband so in love with his wife that he decided to reunite her with her lover so as to ensure her happiness. The movie also created a buzz due to the on screen pairing of the then off screen couple Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (then only Aishwarya Rai). Ajays character was widely loved and appreciated and was even nominated for his role. After the success he had a mixed run at the box office with some its like Kachche Dhaagey and some misses like Hindustan Ki Kasam. He went on to do good cinema and came to the fore front in 2002 with Ram Gopal Vermas Company. The movie based on the underworld in Mumbai showed Ajay Devgn as a Don. The film was a grand success and Ajays role of a gangster was widely acknowledged as one of his best performances. He also essayed the role of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in the movie The Legend of Bhagat Singh and the movie though did not do well at the box office, received critical acclaim and many awards including the National Award for Best Film as well as Ajay Devgns second National Award for Best Actor. Ajay Devgn has also dabbled in negative roles in movies Deewangee and Kaal. His image of a versatile actor was established when he was seen in serious intense roles in political dramas like Gangajal and Apharan as well as a comic actor in Rohit Shettys Golmal series as well as his home productions All the Best. Both his drama and comedy won him fans. His yet another portrayal of a don in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai further steadied his already increasing fan following. Another noteworthy performance by Ajay Devgn was in the lead role of Omkaara an adaptation of Shakespeares Othello. He was much appreciated as a conflicted and jealous lover who eventually falls pray to the schemes of his right hand man played by Saif Ali Khan. The movie was iconic and a super success at the box office. He was also seen in Rajneeti and Rohit Shettys series Singham and Singham Returns. In the latter he plays a cop determined to oust the corrupt politicians with rude force. The movies were a grand success. His movie, Drishyam released in 2015 was another one of his iconic movies. In the movie, contrary to the image of a tough guy, Ajay played the role of a father determined to save his family. The movie was a remake of the Malayalam film of the same name and did excellent business at the box office. His next big release is his directorial venture Shivaay set for a Diwali 2016 release. The first trailers of the movie were recently released to a positive response from the audience.
